“碰瓷”源于北京方言，字面意思是“touching or breaking porcelain”。这个词原本是古玩业的一句行话（jargon），如今泛指一些敲诈勒索行为（blackmail）。例如，故意和机动车相撞，骗取赔偿（deliberately crash a car and demand compensation）。
“碰瓷”是清朝末年一些没落的贵族“发明”的，这些人平日里手捧“名贵”的瓷器（通常是赝品），站在闹市中（position oneself in a crowded public place holding expensive-looking china (usually fake)）。瞅准机会，故意让路过的人“碰”他一下（deliberately let others “hit” him），使手中的瓷器摔落（causing him to drop the china）。于是瓷器的主人就可以缠住“撞人者”要求赔偿。久而久之，人们就称这类欺诈性索赔（fraudulent claims for compensation）为“碰瓷”。
